Carmi challenges us to photograph Critters, large and small, this week. So here are my take on critters I have found in the UK.
Sorry, I don't know what this one is - it might be a hover fly, or possibly a bee. This was taken a couple of years ago - this year it is very worrying as there are NO BEES. Not even a hover fly, and I have deliberately planted bee- and butterfly-friendly flowers. Where are they all?
We get a lot of squirrels in our garden, after the bird food. Most of them are very bold and sit on the water butt outside the kitchen window. This one was doing a runner after I shooed him off!
A heron on the lake in our Park. It was very early, and the light made everything green!
A tortoiseshell butterfly on Sedum. See above on Bees - we have no butterflies either.
Dogs are critters, yes? this is Max, our greedy cocker spaniel.

I have to laugh st your greedy Max we have a Cocker Spaniel too and greedy is her middle name! Hehehe! I like your critters and the unknown bug is busy! I discovered some unknowns while mowing (they were buzzing in groups on my grape vines) and they weren't any bees I've ever seen! Maybe I can catch a shot of them too!
I think your first is a bee. The beeflies try mighty hard to look like bees, but there are some tricks they cannot master. (Like holding their wings that way.)
That last looks to me to be a Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. They love to invade homes in the fall and are a huge pest everywhere.

Great set of critters.
Really nice critter selection, Gilly! I love the green atmosphere in the shot of the heron - he's beautiful! The nasty stink bug isn't, though - although I do like his elegant stance.
My Max is not a cocker spaniel but he is as greedy! Those eyes make it really hard to say no. Love the bugs.
You do have them, Gilly.
Take a look at the picture on fifth from the left, in the second row of pics.
