REFLECTIVE

For this week's theme over at writteninc, Carmi has chosen REFLECTIVE.   Reflections, and being reflective, can often give us another view on life.   Or we can just enjoy watching the water, or ourselves in a mirror, or whatever!

I love watching water, and seeing how the light is broken up by disturbances, or the wind across a lake.

He's paddling like mad with his feet - breaking up the water round him into little bits of reflected light.

A lovely calm day by the lake in our park

Another park shot.   The purple bits are actually reflections of a Rhododendron bush above the water.   Somewhere in there is a coot's nest, but it is exceedingly well hidden!

TRADEMARKS

Trademarks, Logos, whatever!   Some are simple and effective, some have been going for so long we don't really see them.    Not sure about the difference between a registered trademark and a logo, but I am sure if we started using someone else's, we'd soon find out!

Thematic Photography for this week is trademarks.   I couldn't get out with my camera, so went round the house, and found the following.

The charity British Heart Foundation.   Lovely and simple!

The Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, in London.   Another really simple logo that says it all.

Sail away with Princess Cruises, presumably the blue wiggly bits are waves!

Says it all, I think.

Not too sure what that shape indicates!

Yes, OK, we get it!   And probably get what you pay for, as the saying goes.

Now this last one dates from 70 years ago!   Bob might recognise it.   Its the Utility sign.   During WWII in Britain, materials and goods were in short supply, and clothing, furniture and household goods were produced to a basic standard of quality, and with restricted patterns.   But it was fairly good quality, even so, we had a sort of fireside chair at home that lasted many years.   To read about it, go here.   And if you are in the UK this year, I can really recommend the "Fashion on the Ration" exhibition at the Imperial War Museum North, in Manchester.   It really is superb.

SOFTNESS

SOFTNESS is the theme for this week's Thematic Photography.    Carmi has posted a lovely photo of the fur of his dog.   I don't like copying ideas, but I couldn't resist the following photo of our first, and very much-loved dog.   She has been gone many years now, but I never forget her, or wish she was still here!

Wags, part Springer Spaniel, part Border Collie, never quite knew whether to retrieve us or round us up when we went for a walk!!

A feather - what more can I say?

Our garden seat, softly upholstered in snow!

SIGNS

Signs are meant to inform us or instruct us, tell us which way to go, or not go, do or not do, or just to tell us someone is here and would like your custom!   Sometimes, that is hard to believe!    Particularly some of the very large ones at road junctions - and sat nav is not always to be trusted!!

Carmi, over at writteninc. would like us, and you, to look out for signs this week.   Follow the link to see what signs others have come up with, and I bet there will be some wacky ones, meanwhile, this is what I can find in a brief visit to my town.

A mostly moving sign, telling us what they do.   If it hasn't gone past before you have taken it all in!

A nice clear, informative sign.   Except it doesn't say where the pay machines are!

A really friendly sign, outside our local organic food shop.   And very splendid it is too!

The other side tells you some of what is in there!

A sign designed to be read from the other side!

A very tall sign, not terribly helpful, as there are times when vehicles can go down the Market Place.   And can you see the very small sign that
adds that alcohol is not permitted in that area?   No, neither could I!

And then there are teeny weeny signs means for a limited number of people to see.   Presumably an electrician would know what an earth rod is and why he would want to find it?   This is set in the pavement, very inconspicuously!

That's my set of signs!  Do let me know if you have visited!   And go to the link above to see the signs of others!

TIME

A theme of TIME, for Carmi, at Writteninc. posed me a bit of a problem at first.   OK, I have pictures of clocks, though not that many.   Then I thought of all the quotes about time, and decided to illustrate them!

Just to prove I do have a photo of a clock!   This is at Dunhamn Massey, a stately home owned by the National Trust, SW of Manchester.

Time, like an everlasting stream.......

Time flies!

As time goes by......

Time is money!

There is no present or future, only the past, happening over and over again, now. (Eugene O'Neill)   Both of the above are in Orkney

IN THE METAL

Carmi, over at writteninc.thematic photography has chosen IN THE METAL for this week's theme.

There is so much that used to be metal that is now plastic, that just looking round the home I realised how much had changed.

However, I found one thing that hasn't changed, and one that has very much changed!

They haven't managed to make our small change into plastic!  Yet!

Do you remember when OXO Cubes used to come in little metal boxes?   It was a long, long time ago, you might have to ask some of your very elderly relatives about it!   But if they are still around, they are terribly handy for keeping little things in!   this one keeps paper clips!   But thought I'd show it on one of my elderly recipe books!

Do go to the link above and see other  metal working!   And leave a comment if you've visited here, I do love reading them!

MONOCHROME

When I first started photography, long, long ago, under the tutelage of my Father, everything was taken in monochrome.   There was no other.   Somehow we all adapted to that.   So when colour photography became cheaper and more usuable, it was quite a shock!

Anyway, I managed to find a few monochrome pics for  Carmi's Thematic Photography this week.   Do go to the link to see what others have come up with.

Tangled rope on pale wood made a good monochrome shot.

Not strictly monochrome, but these galvanised bins were definitely grey all over!  Seen in our monthly market.

Snow always makes a good monochrome pic!

Hope you enjoyed these - do let me know if you visited!
